It’s no secret we’re obsessed with the new Boxy Circle Tee. Designed with your feedback in mind, it’s the tee you can love and wear doing anything. We tapped some of our favorite creatives in the high desert to see how they’re styling theirs—this time, with choreographer and creative force Ryan Heffington.
Ryan isn’t just living in the desert—he’s building something special here. DESERTRADE, his artist residency in 29 Palms. This year, the focus is on fundraising to renovate the bungalows and workshops, creating a space where artists can come together and create in the vast, open landscape of the desert. “We’ll be having fundraisers throughout the year, and hopefully, we can meet our goal. We’re also enlisting volunteers to help with the buildout.”
Ryan’s a two-time Grammy nominee and Emmy winner whose choreography has made an impact across music, film, TV, and fashion. He broke through with Sia’s “Chandelier,” and he’s collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry, mentored dancers through his LA studio, The Sweat Spot, and brought his signature movement to everything from blockbuster films to intimate stage performances. Whether it’s on stage, on screen, or in a sweaty room full of people dancing their hearts out, Ryan’s work is all about connection—and the desert, he says, is starting to guide what comes next.
Ryan has called the high desert home for five years now, a move that began during the pandemic and turned into something much more profound. “The perspective—both personal and physical—is my favorite part of being here,” he says. “The lack of places to hide has been confronting, a nice deep dive into who I am and what I want. In the Mojave, you can see for miles just about anywhere, providing clarity and peace for the mind. My nervous system has never been more chill.”
He’s not kidding about the chill. The desert’s wide open landscape has done wonders for his nervous system and his creativity. "I’m in my dust flap stage," he says. His iconic choreography, which took root in Hollywood over two decades, is evolving too. "The desert will definitely find its way into the cabaret show I'm working on. It’s kind of our North Star."
That cabaret? A Hi-Desert avant-garde dream, currently taking shape through conversations, manifestations, and a flood of inspiration. “Visuals, costumes, soundscapes, and movement are bombarding me daily, and I'm thriving off of it.”
For now, you can catch him moving and grooving at TITS + PALMS at Mas O Menos on May 3rd, a daytime edition of his beloved dance party. Bonus? He’ll also be slinging gourmet waffles at his pop-up, HEFF’S WAFFS. “Come dance—come stuff your face with delicious gourmet waffles!”
Boxy Circle Tee on, waffles in hand, beats pumping in the background—it’s a high desert dream we’d love to be part of.
