Road Trip: Javier Senosiain’s Casa Orgánica

Welcome to the second stop in our new Road Trip series, where we explore homes and spaces that inspire us across the country. Next up: Casa Orgánica, an architectural gem in Mexico City, designed by renowned architect Javier Senosiain. While this home isn’t open for tours anymore, our founders Robert and Janelle were able to visit while it still was.

Casa Orgánica is unlike any other house you’ve seen, with its organic shapes and earth-like tones that blend seamlessly into the landscape. Senosiain created this space with the idea of living in harmony with nature, so the design feels like it’s part of the ground itself—curved, flowing, and almost alive.

“The exterior gardens look like green grass-covered hills, but it’s actually grass covering the roof of the dwelling. The grass then acts as insulation in the summer and winter months,” says Janelle.

The house was built in 1984 as an experiment in organic architecture. Inspired by the shapes and patterns found in nature, Senosiain wanted to create a home that felt like a natural extension of the earth—peaceful, soothing, and totally in sync with the environment. He took cues from animals' burrows and shells, designing the interior to feel both protective and welcoming

“The house is made from molded concrete.  Touring the home felt meditative, calm, and secure. I felt safe and secure, it was womb-like,” says Janelle.

When you walk into Casa Orgánica, it’s like entering another world. The walls seem to curve around you, the rooms are open and soft, and there’s this amazing feeling of calm and connection to the natural world. From underground living spaces to bright, open areas that bring in tons of natural light, the house is designed to give you a sense of ease while staying completely integrated with its environment.

Janelle says, “I liked seeing how Senosiain integrated the house’s utilities, like switches and kitchen appliances - even the toilet was built into the cave-like concrete wall. Or how there were built-in niches to store toothbrushes on the bathroom wall. And the built-in formed concrete laundry shoot! Form and function.” It’s not just a place to live—it’s a space that invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and feel grounded.
