Summertime in the desert is not for the faint of heart! The heat can be so extreme it feels like you’re walking on the sun. It’s important to stay out of the heat by finding ways to have fun while staying cool, so here are our favorite nighttime and air-conditioned activities in and around the hi-dez.
Stargazing in Joshua Tree National Park
The park entrance is open 24 hours a day! We love going into the park right before sunset with a dinner picnic. Robert has also been going on nighttime motorcycle rides in the park with friends.
UFO Festival and Perseid Meteor Shower Watch Party
Into astronomy and extraterrestrials? Check out Rediscover 29’s Area 29: Galactic Gathering in Twentynine Palms. It’s a four-day festival from August 8th - 11th and will include alien-themed programming and a meteor shower watch party.
Attend an Event at Mon Petit Mojave
RSVP for a free nighttime cultural event at this 15-acre ranch in Yucca Valley best known for their drive-in concerts.
Dinner Al Fresco
We love to pack our little grill in the car and take a few friends into the national park for a low-key outdoor dinner. Arrive just before sunset, bring lanterns for when the sun goes down, and enjoy the magic of a desert sunset in an unbelievably beautiful setting. The park is pretty empty in the summer, so it is the perfect time to get a prime spot. We like to set up at the day-use area of Indian Cove, or in Hidden Valley - both are picturesque with giant boulder backdrops.
Catch a Flick
Feel the nostalgia of a drive-in movie at Smith’s Ranch Drive-In Movie Theater located in Twentynine Palms. They show movies Wednesday - Saturday and you can’t beat their prices and snack bar!
Every second Saturday of the month, many businesses in downtown Joshua Tree stay open late for an art walk. There are art gallery openings, music events, shopping, and plenty of restaurants to choose from.
Yucca Valley 3rd Saturday Art Walk
The Yucca Valley Art Walk features the many galleries of Yucca Valley and Pioneer Town opening their doors to the public, with many debuting new work or new shows.
Reserve a Lane at Yucca Bowl
Grab the gang and head over to our favorite bowling alley, Yucca Bowl, where the beer is cold and the food is anything but boring bowling alley food.
Bill puts on legendary generator shows way out in the middle of nowhere in Landers at Giant Rock (the actual rock, not the cafe). His shows are always great, hosting touring punk, noise, and metal bands. He brings his generator and the bands play in front of a giant wall of boulders. It’s always a magical experience. We recommend some camp chairs so you can pull up in your car and tailgate!
Joshua Tree Retreat Center
Eat breakfast or lunch at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center on Wednesday or Thursday, and get a $10 pool pass good for the day. The Center has a great outdoor pool and hot tub - we love getting into the pool as the sun goes down. The pool is open until 8 pm.
